Meet Katie Sapp
Before she became an industry-renowned stylist, Katie Sapp cut her teeth as Teen Vogue's fashion assistant, where she met our cofounder, Marina. Since then, she's brought her cheerful aesthetic to brands like Intermix, Coach, and now Larroudé, where she styled our Fall 2022 campaign. Below, we chat with Sapp about her entry into fashion, her career goals, and her current shopping list (hint: it involves our favorite Mary Jane platforms).
How/Why did you want to work at Teen Vogue?
Teen Vogue was my first full time job out of college. After interning with other publications, it was a dream come true to be hired to work at a magazine that paved the way for so many legends in the industry. I wanted to work there because Teen Vogue has always been one step ahead of the next big thing. I learned how to spot fashion trends before they even became trends. We shot talent long before they even became huge stars (Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande to name a few!). We were constantly discovering and supporting new designers. As my first real job in fashion, it was an experience that will truly go unmatched. It is what shaped my taste and work ethic — and I’ve carried that with me to every step of my career.
What was your first impression of Marina?
The first time I met Marina, it was for a coffee before she started at Teen Vogue. I was nervous and intimidated to meet her knowing about her very impressive fashion background. When she arrived, I was instantly greeted with her warmth. She exudes so much joy and love for fashion that is absolutely infectious. I just knew I was going to learn so much from her! Flash forward almost 8 years and I’m still working with Marina and still learning so much from her. I’m so thankful for all of the years of support from her as my mentor.
What was your favorite experience while working there with her?
Marina and I have shared so many crazy, fabulous, funny fashion moments — especially working at Teen Vogue. It’s hard to pick just one and some are just too juicy to share! ;) But overall, the joy and excitement Marina brings to her team is my favorite thing about working with her. There is never a dull moment!
What’s the one piece of advice you received that’s been game-changing?
Thoughtfulness goes a long way. Treat every project you have with the same thought and care as you would your dream job. Pay attention to the little details and your surroundings. Be respectful and kind to everyone you meet! This mixed with a positive outlook is the recipe for success in my opinion. It’s simple really, but it leaves a BIG impact.
What’s drawn you to a career in fashion?
Fashion is a place to have fun. It’s a place to explore your creativity. The process of dreaming up a big idea and watching it collaboratively come to life through a fabulous team is so satisfying. Fashion also transforms confidence. Nothing makes me more happy than knowing I styled someone in something that made them feel absolutely beautiful. There is so much about my career that have been “pinch me” moments.
What’s your favorite fashion moment?
The non-stop evolution of fashion is the most exciting to me. It keeps you on your toes and pushes you constantly to think creatively and pay attention. Every season has something new to explore. It never stops!
What advice would you have for your younger self?
Trust your confidence, instincts, ideas and don’t be afraid to speak up! It does take time to find your voice in the creative industry, but you had it in your mind and heart all along.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope I am still working creatively, still learning from and meeting new inspiring creatives, maybe have a personal styling business of my own, and live in a gorgeous home that’s constantly filled with flowers.
What’s the most pivotal thing you’ve learned while working with Marina?
Marina taught me that no idea is too small or too big. She takes admirable risks. She’s helped me learn how to dream bigger, work harder, to always “get it done!” and celebrate your successes.
What’s your most prized piece of clothing or accessory?
Everyone remembers their first BIG fashion purchase. One of my first designer investments as an assistant at Teen Vogue was this gorgeous floral Proenza skirt that feels so quintessentially them. I still wear it, and feel it's a timeless piece in my wardrobe that I’ll always gravitate toward.
What’s on your wish list right now?
My style has evolved into timeless classics with a fresh take — which is why I am dying to get my hands on the Larroudé Olivia mary jane platforms. I love the lasting effect a mary jane has, and the platform is giving the perfect mix of nostalgia and new.
