Mariah Brooke Q&A

Mariah Brooke Q&A

Meet Our Colléct Mode, Mariah Brooke

The fresh-faced model helped us bring our new boutique shopping experience to life with a shoot that was as fun as it was festive. We talked with this Columbia first year, who’s new appreciation for NYC has us inspired.

What do you do?

I’m currently a first-year student at Columbia University, so school takes up most of my time. I’m also a dancer, so a lot of my time that isn’t spent at school is spent in the studio.

Piece of advice for your younger self / One thing you wish you knew when you were first starting out?

Learn to advocate for yourself and ask for help. You’d be surprised how much grace and generosity other people give you if you ask.

How does your style reflect who you are as a person?

My style is always evolving, especially since I’m just starting college and learning who I am outside of high school. Right now, comfort is key since I’m studying, dancing, or relaxing most of the time, but I love an opportunity to get dressed up for something like a shoot.

Who was your first style icon?

My mom. She always put a lot of time into dressing me in matching outfits and I have the baby pictures to prove it.

Worst fashion trend of all time?

Currently, I’m not a fan of skinny jeans, but I also believe that if you don’t look back on what you were wearing and cringe a little bit you aren’t growing.

What is your uniform?

Jeans, a giant (ugly-ish) sweater, and a pair of Reeboks. I’ve curated quite the collection of sweaters from shopping secondhand and taking the pieces my dad no longer wants.

What makes you feel the most inspired?

Witnessing people who are doing what they were born to do.

What task could you do for hours and not get bored?

A podcast and sudoku is a dream evening alone, but when I have the chance, I love to go on a long walk with a friend and just talk.

Favorite vacation spot?

Since moving to college, home. I’m from Seattle originally, and I miss how beautiful the Pacific Northwest is.

Favorite Larroude Shoe?

I wore the Dolly Sandals on my shoot with Larroudé and it was the most fun I’ve ever had in a pair of shoes.

What’s your go-to Spotify Playlist?

I am definitely more of an album person than a playlist person. My current top three albums are MUNA’s self-titled, The Record by boygenius, and Feeding Seahorses by Hand by Billie Marten, but I’m always looking for new music.

Favorite restaurant/dish in your city?

I’m vegetarian, so I’m always looking for great plant based options. Back in Washington, I love Cafe Flora and Issaquah Coffee Company. In New York, I am a frequent patron of Columbia’s dining halls, but I love the restaurant Spicy Moon when I have the chance to head downtown.
